7. Security
We employ SSL (Secure Socket Layer), which is a protocol for secure transfer of data over the Internet (and other networks). Netscape Communications have developed and produced SSL - a protocol that has now become and industry standard.
A protocol is a set of rules and procedures to determine how information (data) is to be handled. The SSL protocol handles data in several different ways and "muddles up" the information. This is done so that the data cannot be read during the transfer between two computers and is called encryption. Once the recipient has received the data, SSL will "restore" the original data, check the authenticity of the sender (Server Authenticity) and check that the data has not changed during the transfer (Message Integrity).

SSL uses a digital certificate to check the sender, recipient or both the sender and the recipient of a data transfer. A digital certificate is the "tool" that is used to link information on a particular individual or organisation to something called a "public key" and has two objectives:

All SSL certificates for Internet use are handled by companies that are approved certificate suppliers. This also means that all SSL certificates are unique and issued correctly. Everyone applying for an SSL certificate must be able to prove their identity in order to purchase an SSL certificate.

For the consumer, the only requirement is to use a web browser that can handle SSL, which the two major web browsers - Netscape and Internet Explorer - have been able to do many versions ago. SSL must not be deactivated in the web browser settings either.
