[Let this sketch of Orm inspire you when you draw your idea] |
(2002-03-26, Auckland) Victory Challenge's first America's Cup boat in own construction is called Örn.
The second is to be called Orm.
But what is Orm going to look like? You can take part in its design by drawing Orm. For some inspiration, look at our own sketch of the symbol that will be used for the boat taking part in America's Cup that will be starting with the Louis Vuitton Cup on October 1.
Can you draw a better Orm? First prize for the best idea is a trip for two to Auckland, New Zealand, to see Orm compete in the world's most legendary sailing race.
Perhaps you can tell that our sketch of Orm has been inspired by the Lock Ness monster. The first reported sighting of the Lock Ness monster in Scotland was in 1868 (that was already 17 years after the first America's Cup). The monster of the lake myth was originally based on a sea snake. This is the way we'd like you to think when you start drawing. And there's not much time.
Orm is being built right now in Gothenburg.
Orm's designer is the same as it was for Örn, German Frers Jr., who was previously one of Prada's head designers of the boat they built for the final of the America's Cup in 2000.
The construction is being headed by Chris Mellow, who helped to build the Black Magic boat NZL 38 (which Victory Challenge bought and is now using as a training boat). Örn (SWE 63) was christened in Gothenburg on October 27 last year and has been sailing in Auckland since mid-December.
So far, Örn has not only sailed against NZL 38 (under the name of Cristina) but also against mainly Team New Zealand and their NZL 60, winner of America's Cup 2000.
Örn is evidently a fast boat.
The tests that were carried out during the development of Orm, such as tank tests at SSPA Maritime Consulting AB, show that this boat can be even faster.
Orm (SWE 73) will be ready at the turn of June-July for transporting from Gothenburg to Auckland.
That's why we want your drawing of Orm at the latest by June 14, 2002. You can e-mail a picture of Orm to bert.willborg@victorychallenge.com or send it to Victory Challenge, Box 2095, SE 10313 Stockholm, Sweden. Mark the envelope with Orm. That also applies to the subject on your e-mail.
The person submitting the best proposal for the Orm logotype will win a trip for two people to New Zealand. The ultimate experience for anyone interested in sailing will be waiting for you there. Together with your friend, you will be able to follow the Louis Vuitton Cup in October, when nine or ten challengers, Victory Challenge among them, start their long campaign for the Louis Vuitton Cup and the chance of meeting Team New Zealand in the final of the America's Cup.

You can win:
Trip for 2 people to Auckland, New Zealand
Accommodation for 5 nights
Visit to Victory Challenge's base in the America's Cup village
A visit to Victory Challenge is a unique opportunity to see close up the first Swedish America's Cup challenge for 12 years - a challenge that is already judged as being very competitive.
You'll also have time to enjoy yourself experiencing this land of many adventures, of course. There's lots to choose from, a fantastic nature, miles of white beaches, deserted paradises, laid-back people, wine districts and Auckland's big-city pulse.
